Have yourself a Simple little Christmas
How many times have we've seen people get caught up in the "hustle and bustle" of the holidays?
For some, it's almost like they are proud of it..... rushing around, staying busy and doing all of the things.
Others wish that they could get out of the frantic cycle and chill for a bit... but with presents to buy, parties and Christmas events to attend...who has time to slow down?! I don't know about you but for me, the holidays go by way too fast that I don't want to stay super busy.
In today's society of "keeping up with the Joneses" and getting the "latest and greatest," many have forgotten the real beauty of a simple Christmas.
People get so caught up in getting the best Christmas gifts for everyone, for throwing the best parties and for doing all things festive, that they miss out on how beautiful it can be when you simplify Christmas.
Thinking back on some of my fondest Christmas memories, I can't remember hardly any specific gifts, and I certainly don't remember any parties or programs. What I do remember.....
I remember pulling into my grandparent's driveway with their yard all decorated in lights; the smell of rolls baking in the oven as we walk into their home; the most beautiful Christmas tree in their den next to the fireplace. I remember them staying up with us every night to watch Christmas movies. I remember the excitement on Christmas morning, the music, the laughter and of course the breakfast after unwrapping gifts.
Think about some of your most best Christmas memories.... odds are they have little or nothing to do with the gifts you got and had more to do with the simple things that made you FEEL the spirit of Christmas.
Let's face it.... Gifts don't stick around, but Feelings & memories.... those stick with you forever.
So, how do we get back to a simple, calm and intentional Christmas?
Well for one....
STOP SPENDING MORE MONEY and START SPENDING MORE TIME.
Now, I'm not saying you have to cut out getting gifts for people. I love getting people Christmas gifts.... I'm just saying, stop the pressure that goes with it.
I promise you.... your kids and loved ones don't need the latest and greatest things. Just pick out something thoughtful and meaningful.
Set a budget/limit and stick to it!
Don't put yourself in a stressful place because you are buying gifts that you can't even afford.
Limit the activities/commitments you take on around this time of year. I know it can be tempting to do all the things, but... time is precious... slow down and enjoy the season with the ones you love.
One of the best things we can do for ourselves and those we love is to create those memories and feelings that will last a lifetime. These things can't be found at a store or wrapped up in a pretty box and bow; these are found in the simple little things that bring so much magic to the season.
So, if you are looking for a way to simplify Christmas this year remember you don't have to buy and do all the things. Some of the most beautiful things in life are the most simple.
Eat a special meal together
Bake Christmas cookies and take them to a neighbor
Drive around with some hot cocoa to see Christmas lights
Watch some Christmas movies
Play Christmas music
String some popcorn for the tree
Start a new tradition
and remember....
SPEND MORE TIME NOT MORE MONEY.
Keep it simple, soak in the beauty of the little moments and
Have yourself a Merry Simple Christmas.
