The choice you must make everyday // Marriage
We've all seen it in movies and shows, or read about it in books... the classic fairytale love story. Two people that were made for each other. They would do anything for each other and no matter what life throws at them, they seem to handle everything together with grace.
If only it were that simple.
Way back in 2001 I started dating this guy, in fact this was my first boyfriend ever. I was really picky with guys that I was even interested in, so you better believe I was super picky with dating. People would tell us that we were so cute together, that we were made for each other, that we had that fairytale love. Skip ahead 16 years later and now that young, goofy, drummer kid is now my husband of 10 years.
Now, I'm sure there are some of you that are thinking... SEE!! A fairytale love! But being completely honest, it hasn't always felt like a fairytale. In fact.... I'm not sure it has ever really felt like a fairytale love.
Why?..... because love isn't that easy.
See, in the fairytales everything always seems to fall into place, it's made to look easy.
In reality, love is hard. Love is a choice you must make every single day.
In the scheme of things, being married 10 years may not seem like a long time, but when you take into account that my husband and I got married when we were 19 & 21 and that we are a military family, it's a pretty big deal. We've had to deal with the typical everyday stresses in life, but we've also had some unique challenges... like being apart for months, moving around, having children without family nearby and adjusting back to living together after deployments (yes, it's harder than you think).
When I think about making the choice to put your spouse ahead of yourself, I can't help but to brag on my hubby a little bit.
I am in a season of life right now where I am trying to build up my business..... which is no easy task when you have two little ones at home with you.
Every single day, after my husband gets home from work, he watches and plays with the girls so I can have a little extra time to work. Despite the fact that he is exhausted and never really has the energy that the girls seem to have, he sees that it helps me out.
Now I'm sure that he would love to come home and just sit down and relax, but he makes the choice everyday to help me out and to put me and our girls first. It may not seem like a big deal, but it means so much to me! He sees that I'm working hard towards something that is very important to me and he makes the choice everyday to help me out anyway he can.
He could easily make the choice to do what he wants, to relax and take it easy after working all day... but he chooses to put me ahead of his wants.
That's what love is..... making the choice to love and put your spouse ahead of yourself every single day!
Marriage isn't easy. Two people, with different personalities and quirks are coming together to be one. It get's hard!
The choice has to be made every day to love, to put your spouse ahead of yourself.
People grow at different rates, make the choice to to grow together.... don't leave the other one behind.
Life throws some hard things at us all, make the choice to face those times together...... be each other's rock.
Marriage is not a fairytale, it's not easy.... it's hard work, but it's so worth it.
